‘Little Failure’ Book Trailer Stars James Franco & Gary Shteyngart

Book trailers are something of an art these days — the good ones stand out and usually take some money to make, or are particularly creative in their use of music, video, imagery or unusual ideas. I’d say the trailer for Gary Shteyngart’s upcoming memoir, Little Failure, is one of the latter.

For starters, James Franco plays Shteyngart’s husband whose book (“an erotic journey”) is coming out at the same time as the memoir. Them sitting around in pink bathrobes discussing the title of the memoir was startling enough, but I laughed out loud quite a few times. The trailer also has cameos from a few famous people, cue more laughter.

It also features appearances from actress Rashida Jones, Freedom author Jonathan Franzen, writer David Ebershoff, filmmaker Alex Karpovsky, and essayist Sloane Crosley.

Shteyngart has only written a few books, including The Russian Debutante's Handbook and Super Sad True Love Story, but has had an interesting life. I think the trailer has done its job very well — I want to read it now. Have a look and see if it’ll entice you to read it, as well.
