News, NaNoWriMo, Ben H. Winters

Ben H. Winters, author of the excellent Last Policeman series, has a deal for the folks currently toiling away on NaNoWriMo manuscripts: Donate a little scratch to Doctors Without Borders, and he'll select one charitable soul for a critique.

Here are the parameters of the offer, from his website:

TO ENTER: make a donation to Doctors Without Borders ($25 or more) before November 30, and forward the confirmation you get to winters3000@gmail.com. (Feel free to redact your address & phone, if you want; their confirmation email does not include any credit card info).

THE PRIZE: I will randomly select ONE ENTRANT AS THE WINNER (out of all those received by the end of November). If you are that winner, then by December 31, author Ben H. Winters (uh, that’s me) will carefully read your NaNoWriMo manuscript, and offer a detailed written critique to help you get it from first to second draft.

This is a killer deal, for two reasons. First, Ben is a fantastic writer; I love the Policeman books, and I've gifted the first installment to at least a half-dozen people.

Second, NaNoWriMo is great for helping you nail down the framework, but it's not so great at giving you a finished project. The real art comes in the editing process, and getting input from professional author is a great way to bring your story to the next level.

Something like that is so valuable, we had a similar idea: NaNoFixMo, a two-week workshop with Delilah S. Dawson, where you'll get tips and input on turning your first draft into a second draft.

So, check out Ben's offer. Check out Delilah's class. And if you're currently mired in a NaNo draft... stop reading this and get back to work!

I read The Last Policeman and thought it was great - this is a very cool idea for people who'd like to get lucky with such a professional review, plus donating to a worthy charity!
