Showcasing another technological advancement of the printed word, the company Layar now offers a way "to make the print world clickable." Through their "augmented reality", you can look at your magazine through your smartphone and play videos embedded in the text, order listed products, "like" aspects of the mag on your Facebook page, and plenty of other stuff.
As someone who runs a magazine, I'm conflicted. On one hand, this provides a more enriching experience for the reader, breaking out of the somewhat-restrictive medium of ink and paper to allow multimedia connectivity. On the other hand (the one holding the iPhone), it seems like we've become so desensitized by media that even a simple magazine spread needs videos and a link to our Facebook page. Do we really need to "merge our online and offline worlds"?
Ultimately, it's hard to predict what (if any) effect this could have on the literary world. It could branch out into other mediums (interactive novels, anyone?) or it could suck almighty. You can watch the video below.
